Sabrina Granniss, BA, IBCLC, RLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Registered Lactation Consultant (RLC) and owner of Nurture By Nature Holistic Lactation. She offers holistic breastfeeding services and parenting support for families in their homes throughout Connecticut. Virtual/remote consultations are also available for families in and outside of CT. Sabrina understands the need for quality lactation and postpartum care and wants to make sure families have the opportunity to feel cared for and supported during this important time. Sabrina is dedicated and focussed on listening to each individual parent’s birth and breastfeeding story. Hearing their personal goals, concerns and challenges with compassion. Sabrina offers non-judgemental counseling, information and a care plan specific to the needs of each unique dyad. Sabrina is experienced in assisting parents with a wide range of breastfeeding concerns and skills. She meets with families both pre- and postnatally. Some common needs addressed include: beginning breastfeeding; latch issues; fussy baby; nighttime feeding; breast or nipple pain; using a breast pump successfully; baby wearing; slow/low weight gain; low milk supply; overactive letdown; oversupply; plugged ducts; mastitis; introduction of solid foods; and more. Sabrina also is knowledgeable in complex issues related to tongue tie, oral restrictions and oral function. Sabrina began her breastfeeding education as a La Leche League Leader (volunteer based mother-to-mother breastfeeding support group) in 2001 after overcoming challenges she experienced by her most powerful teacher, her first born son! In 2005, Sabrina began a mentorship in holistic breastfeeding care with Jennifer Tow, BFA, MA, IBCLC, RLC, OMT of Intuitive Parenting and Holistic Lactation Institute. In line with her passion for natural living, Sabrina learned the importance of looking at the body as a whole, how to uncover the root cause of an issue, rather than just treating symptoms and to use an integrative approach including nutrition, homeopathy, herbs and body work as well as other holistic modalities. She learned to follow her instincts and empower parents to follow theirs. There is a link with the biology and physiology of breastfeeding and its direct impact on the baby’s growth and structure. Sabrina became an IBCLC in 2007 and ever since, operates a private practice, Nurture By Nature Holistic Lactation, enjoying her consultations with parents both in their own home and remotely. It is critical to work together with the baby and parents addressing immediate concerns, as well as providing educational information empowering parents to make informed feeding and parenting choices. This early family connection and support helps the baby thrive not only now but throughout life. Sabrina has an Associates degree in Child Studies and a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts. She was a Master Class participant, for “Oral Habilitation Of the Breastfeeding Dyad”, and focuses on the whole body for optimal breastfeeding and development. She also has a personal interest in working with parents who are themselves, or have a child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Sabrina lives with her husband, Dan and two sons, River and Gatlin. She breastfed her boys for a total of ten years until they each naturally weaned. Sabrina enjoys the journey of parenting from a holistic, nature based approach. She has been homeschooling both of her kids listening to and following their lead. She values gathering with other women friends to empower one another, learn from one another, support each other, craft together and of course laugh a lot together. Sabrina is always exploring new ways to nurture her clients, always learning, always listening.

Danielle Freeman is a Licensed Practical Nurse, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and the owner and founder of Milkin' Melanin Lactation Services LLC. Her love for supporting families was born when she was recruited to become a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor after having breastfed her own children. She is extremely passionate about the support she provides and believes in quality, collaborative care. Danielle was recently selected as a Board Member for the Connecticut Breastfeeding Coalition. She is also a member and co-facilitator of the New Haven Breastfeeding Task Force to increase the breastfeeding initiation and duration rates among African American moms. Danielle has three amazing children who were all breastfed. The lack of professional support when nursing her own children, was an additional motivating factor for creating Milkin' Melanin Lactation Services. She wants to be able to provide the support that she did not have. Currently, she is offering virtual, in-home, and in-office services in Hamden to prenatal and postpartum families. She’s partnered with Lactation Network to accept Cigna and Blue Cross Blue Shield (includes Anthem and Empire). All plans must be PPO. Qualifying clients will receive 6 insurance covered visits (can be any combination of prenatal and postpartum services.

IBCLC
Lactation Consultants who have the initials IBCLC or RLC after their names have completed rigorous training, including hundreds of hours of supervised experience, and passed a certifying exam given by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, which is independently accredited. This is the highest level of professional lactation qualification, and those holding it are required to recertify every five years. An IBCLC may charge a fee, which may not be covered by insurance.
Read more about the IBCLC credential here.
Breastfeeding Counselors and Educators
Breastfeeding Counselors and Educators come from a variety of backgrounds and training programs. Such training includes classes or coursework, and may or may not include hands-on experience with nursing mothers and babies. A person listed in this section may hold a certificate saying they have completed a course or series of courses; the certificate may also show that the person passed an exam.
These Counselors and Educators will list credentials like Certified Lactation Counslor (CLC), Certified Lacation Specialist, Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), etc. Because these are offered by different organizations, with different requirements for training and for certification, it is best to read about the training of each type of Breastfeeding Counselor and Educator here.
Free Community Breastfeeding Support Counselors
Free Community Breastfeeding Support Counselors are women who have received training from a specific organization, and have often breastfed their own babies. Some of these organizations require the Counselor to keep up-to-date with continuing education. These Counselors provide support about situations that may arise over the normal course of breastfeeding, and can guide a nursing mother in seeking help from a professional when needed. They may be available for phone help, in support group settings, and will sometimes provide home visits. This support is usually free (some may ask for coverage of expenses like parking if required when doing a home visit).
Free Community Breastfeeding Support Counslers may be trained by national organizations like Breastfeeding USA and La Leche League, or local ones. Read more about various volunteer training programs here.
Medical Professional
Medical Professionals listed on ZipMilk are people who have a medical credential and have expressed an interest in breastfeeding. They might include doctors, midwives, osteopaths, or dentists.
As with non-medical practitioners, the most rigorous professional certification in breastfeeding is the IBCLC. Doctors may also be members or fellows of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, a world-wide organization of MDs interested in breastfeeding. Please note that a medical credential by itself does not show that the person has breastfeeding expertise. A Medical Professional who is listed here should tell you about their additional experience or training in breastfeeding.
Read more about various credentials you may see in addition to a practitioners medical degree here.
Support Group
Support Groups on ZipMilk might be led or facilitated by a person from one of several different backgrounds. The person might be a volunteer counselor, IBCLC, Peer Counselor or CLC, or something else - feel free to ask about a facilitator's training if it is not clearly stated.
Support Groups offer a chance to meet other mothers and get advice on breastfeeding from both peers and experts. Group times and locations are subject to change. Please call to confirm these before attending a meeting. Groups run by volunteers are usually free. Groups run by hospitals or businesses may have a charge or require registration.
Read more about the training of the people who might run these Support Groups here.
WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator
WIC Breastfeeding Coordinators oversee programs that support breastfeeding mothers enrolled in the federal program for Women, Infants, and Children. Many WIC offices have peer counselors who can provide support for nursing families. Search ZipMilk for your local WIC office to find out what services are available.
Read more about the training program for WIC Peer Counselors here.
